BLIZZARD 2011

Well, I guess a Blizzard will finally make me update my blog, huh? Its been a crazy 24 hours! The Blizzard of 2011 has hit the Milwaukee/Racine area. Its been crazy. We knew it would be a big storm but it was bigger than expected especially in the Racine area. Jon was working through most of it, ended up working 20 hours including spending 6 hours stranded in his police squad in a snow drift until they could get 3 plows through to help get him out.. He finally came home around noon today after walking through the snowdrifts and about 1/2 mile to get home! Let's just say his little wife didn't sleep well until I knew he made it to a building at 2am. I was up being a prayer warrior for those dedicated police and rescue workers.

We got about 24 inches of snow and have snow drifts in our yard of 3-5 feet. The country roads in Racine had some snow drifts up to 12 feet. There were over 40 cars stranded, police squads stranded, plows stuck, tow trucks stuck. They called for help from the National Guard that also got stuck. They took a rescue Humvee out to get people out thier cars and had snowmobilers check on them. This evening there are still many roads not plowed or just one lane done..schools are still closed tommorow. The snow banks are up to 5-7 feet along the side of the road.

There was no way I could make it to work and that was the case for pretty much everyone in Racine.. There were 1400 closings in Milwaukee/Racine area .. I guess as a hospital SW and discharge planner not many patients could leave today anyways. I do feel bad for many of the nurses and doctors that must have been stuck there and forced to work long hours to take care of patients until help can get in. I am really hoping I should be able to make it to work tommorow.

This storm makes me soo thankful for a warm safe home, a fire in the fireplace and a hubby who is my hero. Especially after working in the weather for 20 hours, he came up and snowblowed our driveway for 2 hours. What a guy! Love the things he does for me.

So I am sure this will be the storm of the decade. I am glad its over. Everyone is safe and life can get back to normal. I must say I did enjoy the napping and relaxing snow day at home. I think I am ready for Spring now though!
